WooCommerce checkout optimisation: a practical guide

Where shoppers hesitate between cart and confirmed order, and the fixes that remove each pause without slowing the store down.

Every step between the cart and a confirmed order is a place a shopper can hesitate. Most checkout advice adds things: badges, pop-ups, urgency. The fixes that last usually take something away.

Here’s where shoppers stop, and what removes each pause without slowing the store down.

Where shoppers stop

Start with your own numbers. In WooCommerce Analytics, compare carts created with orders placed, then walk through checkout yourself on a phone. The pauses are usually obvious once you look for them:

  • A form that asks for things you never use.
  • A returning customer typing the same address again.
  • A cart that has to be built product by product.
  • A checkout page that loads slowly on mobile data.

Remove fields you don’t need

Every field is a small decision. If you don’t use a company name or a second address line, don’t ask for it. On the block checkout, optional fields are switched off in the Checkout block’s settings. On the classic checkout, a filter does it:

functions.php · classic checkout
add_filter( 'woocommerce_checkout_fields', function ( $fields ) {
    unset( $fields['billing']['billing_company'] );
    return $fields;
} );

Let returning customers skip the typing

A returning customer shouldn’t retype an address you already have. An address book lets them pick a saved one at checkout, for billing and shipping. Unwan does this with one list per customer, in both the block and classic checkout.

Make the cart arrive ready

For a campaign, don’t send shoppers to a product page and hope they build the right cart. Send a link that fills it. CartPresets turns a set of products into one link, at the price you set, so the email click lands on a cart that’s ready to pay for.

Keep checkout fast

Checkout is where extra scripts hurt most, because shoppers are on it at the moment they decide. Check what loads there with Query Monitor, and ask each plugin to justify its place. A plugin that loads everywhere is a plugin that slows checkout too.

Test every change

Change one thing at a time, and give it long enough to see a difference in orders. A checkout that feels better but converts the same is still worth keeping if it’s faster, but it isn’t a win to report.
